Race Day
I did three events with Team in Training last year: The Shamrock Half Marathon in March in Virginia Beach, the Fletcher Flyer Century Ride near Asheville, NC in May, and The Nations Triathlon in Washington, DC in September. I got caught up in celebrating 20 years of Team in Training, and hoped to raise $20K to mark this special occasion.

The Nations Triathlon in September featured a .9 mi. swim in the Potomac River (views of the Jefferson Memorial), 26 miles on the bike along the Rock Creek Parkway, and a 6.2 mi. run with views of the nation's capitol and Washington Monument. Driving around this quirky city and dealing with big heat made this event a challenge and a reminder of my age. I was in the last swim wave, taking off at 8:36 AM. By the time I swam and biked, it was 96 degrees for the run, so my run was more of a jog/walk to the finish. Still, the spirit of the day was awesome, and I'd do it again in a hot minute if someone lowered me w/all my gear from a helicopter! - Some Other Race
The Fletcher Flyer Century Ride followed a season of spring training, watching spring unfold in six counties of Virginia! It was amazing, and so was our team. Mike Houston was our Team Honoree, and a participant, along with his daughter Beth from Vancouver. On race day, we decided to stay together for the entire ride...and it's a day I'll remember forever. Conditions were perfect and our victory was sweet - but soon turned bittersweet as we witnessed Mike's relapse into leukemia. We lost him in July, and we all miss him. - Some Other Race Winter training paid off in doing the Shamrock Half Marathon - in Virginia Beach. It was refreshing to run by the ocean and to be dressed for cooler rather than warmer temps. This was a great, fun event that celebrated all things Irish...even Coach Bob dressed as a leprachaun in tall hat, big bow tie, wide smile, and green jacket!
